HISTORY

This page contains research that has been done on the movement of the Swick family in the U.S. It contains brief "facts" concerning known and unknown Swick lineage. Please contact the webmaster for any corrections to the information on this page.

Sections are currently arranged by time. In the early 1700s, Johannes came to New Jersey, and in the latter part of the 18th century, family moved to Pennsylvania and Virginia, and New York. Movement occurred in the early 1800s into West Virginia and Ohio. In the mid and latter part of the 19th century, Swicks began migration across the entire U.S., including Nebraska, Arkansas, and Texas. Also included is Swick history from 1900 to the present.

Queries for unknown information (unknown lineage or descendants) are noted in Red.

The Swicks

Historically, Swicks have been involved in the farming industry. As you may have noticed by the name of this web site (The Barn of Swick), this is a light-hearted name for the site and in no way is meant to offend anyone related to "The House of Swick" book. If I have, I apologize. Another historical fact, also noted in the censuses, is that no Swick has ever had slaves.

The name 'Swick' has also been found under the spellings 'Swik', 'Zwick', and 'Zwik', although no one can determine which spellings were used when. As noted on the HOME page, Johannes came to the U.S. from Erlenbach, Germany.

In our research, we have also found the surname 'Swick' used in non-related family lines in the U.S. In the 1920 census, a 'John Swick' was found living in Omaha, NE. He noted his birthplace as Poland. One of the web site contributors was also contacted by a Swick with Russian ancestry. Another contributor also found a family in a World Family Tree with the name 'Swick', but was originally spelled 'Cwiklinski'. If you are one of these Swicks and would like us to create a link to your web site, please let us know.
