Frequently Asked Questions on Contributing to the Swick Super Web

Does 'contribute' mean money?
No. 'Contribute' relates to genealogical information that will contribute to the content of this web site. This web site has been created to benefit the Swick family without profit of any kind.

Why would I contribute?
The Swick Super Web is advertised on many different search engines and genealogical sites. Hopefully, this will give you higher visibility in your search for Swick family information. Also, other Swick family contributors may be willing to trade information on Swicks you are researching.

This web site serves as a focal point for all Swick researchers.
How can I contribute?
There are currently two different levels for web site contrbutions:
  1. Swick Query Only: Queries will be posted, but none of your contact information will be given high visibility and responses to your query will come from the webmaster only. If Swick family information is found on your personal home page, it will be noted on the 'Resources' page.
  2. Swick Family Tree: Your name will be given high visibility on the web site. You will be noted as a contributor on this page. Your name will also be listed next to your family tree branch in the outline view of the consolidated Swick family tree. Your queries will be posted along with your name as a contact. Please include the minimum amount of tree information needed.

What is the minimum information I should include to be noted as a level 2 contributor?
Minimum information on your Swick family tree includes the following:
  1. Full names of individuals
  2. Locations (country, state, county, township, town...)
  3. Full dates (mm/dd/yyyy)
  4. Souce of information

Why have minimum information?
This web site represents a consolidated effort of Swick research. To achieve this, a standard method of documenting facts is needed. As more reliable facts are found, old facts will be overridden, or verified.
How do you track fact reliability?
Following is a chart describing how we track the most reliable information sources. Of course, the goal is to achieve Level 1 sources for all information (reliability flow is from the bottom - up), and source information should always be documented on an individual for name, birth, marriage, death, and any other applicable piece of information.

Level 1: written, proven information (official documents, family histories)

Level 2: information researched by an unknown person, able to find researcher and/or can verify sources, if need be (books, LDS family trees, other family trees)

Level 3: purely theoretical, sound hunches. Estimations based on factual information

Level 4: cannot prove information, unable to find person who researched information (old, undocumented family trees)

Can I contribute more information?
By all means, yes! The purpose of this web site is to reproduce as much history as possible on the Swick family by researching many different dimensions on an individual. Besides the minimum family tree information, the Swick Super Web includes places for the following information:
How secure is my information?
Not very -- this IS the Internet. The good news is, all of your submitted information will be seen world-wide. The bad news is, all of your submitted information will be seen world-wide. It's a double-edged sword.

Fear not, though. This web page represents many, many hours of work some researchers have put into tracing the Swick family history. We don't want to worry about our hard work being used improperly. Therefore, the webmaster will utilize the following principles as information is posted to the web site:
  1. Webmaster will convert all dates to year only. Full dates will be kept by the webmaster, but not posted to the web. As more reliable data is found, dates will be overridden, and contributors will be contacted.
  2. Living people will not be posted to the web site. For now, the cutoff year defined to identify living individuals is 1908. If you have any living relatives on your tree born before this date, please let the webmaster know.
  3. The webmaster also has used many different genealogy data manipulation tools. If you would like assistance in massaging some of your data, please let the webmaster know.

Also, a notice has been placed on the main page of this web site stating that none of the information contained in this web site can be used for profit of any kind. The webmaster will contact you if such an offer arises from an outside source.

Who can I contact?
Contact the webmaster describing how you would like to contribute to the Swick Super Web.
